Kerala Government Planning to Introduce 'Unified Varsities Act'

Brushing aside the protests against, The Government of Kerala is going ahead with the plans to introduce The Unified Universities Act. The move was initiated during the UDF rule in 1993, then deferred due to massive protest against. In recent times the difficulties faced by the Government to get over the decisions of the Calicut University Syndicate in the Engineering College admissions instigated the move.

A ministerial sub committee was assigned to draft the bill. According to the Government, The new bill will guarantee lucidity to the higher education sector and give a thrust to the 'new privatization of education' policy. But the protestors argue that it will result in total Government control over the universities and would wipe out the democratic nature of the same

In the outlook of the officials, the new bill will focus more on education facilitation than simple issues like the nomination of senate and its composition, there are rules to maintain the financial discipline of the universities, establishing autonomous colleges etc.. The bill also envisages a unified academic calendar for the universities.

In the present situation, the only other state, which is having a 'Common Varsity Act' is Karnataka. The Kerala Government had already passed another Ordinance called The Kerala University Ordinance, and which provides a platform for the further play. Now the associations of Teachers and Students are planning agitations against the bill, pointing that it will only help to tear down the balance in the higher education sector.
